ITV exposes Brazilian zebu being served in restaurants
Do you know what you’re eating?
A television programme has highlighted the fact that many people really don’t know what meat they’re eating, or where it comes from, when they order beef from a British menu.
The ITV exposé – Undercover Mum – featured one woman’s mission to reveal the amount of Brazilian zebu beef served by popular pub chains. Channel 4’s Richard & Judy also highlighted the issue with a zebu vs British beef taste test on Britain’s streets.
Andrew Garvey of EBLEX (English Beef & Lamb Executive) said that this raised important questions about the origin of meat served in British restaurants.
“Most of the people questioned in the programme assumed that the meat they were eating was locally sourced,” said Garvey. “The bottom line is that people do want to know about the provenance of their food.”
To ensure you are eating local produce, raised in the Dales, and not transported thousands of miles (like zebu from Brazil), shop at your knowledgeable, local butcher’s or dine at a pub, or restaurant, that cooks quality, local meat. This way you’ll be supporting the local community and helping to protect the environment.
